Swiss percussionist and composer, Fritz Hauser, talks with Boom! Artistic Director, Ian Cleworth, about his approach to rhythm, percussion, sound, music, conceptualising, composition, and much more, with particular reference to his latest work, Point Line Area.

Born 1953 in Basel, Switzerland, Fritz Hauser develops solo programmes for percussion and drums, which he performs worldwide.
He has composed for percussion ensembles and soloists, chamber orchestras, and choirs. He has also composed sound installations for Therme Vals, Architekturmuseum Basel, Castel Burio Italy, Kunsthaus Zug, Fondation van Gogh in Arles, and the University of Zurich, among others, and has composed for radio plays, films, and readings.
He has created interdisciplinary works with the lighting designer, Brigitte Dubach, the director, Barbara Frey, the architect, Boa Baumann, and the choreographer, Kinsun Chan. In the field of percussion music, he plays and works with percussion soloists and ensembles all over the world. He has released numerous CDs as soloist and with various ensembles.
He is the 2012 Culture Prize winner of the City of Basel and Culture Prize winner Music Basel-Landschaft 1996. In summer 2018, he was composer-in-residence at the Lucerne Festival. For the next Ruhrtriennale under the direction of Barbara Frey, he will curate a percussion series spanning three years, from 2021 to 2023.
