Originally presented in 2014 to rave reviews and sold-out audiences, Damien Ryan’s reprisal production of The Crucible offers audiences a rare, immersive and immensely detailed vision of this great play. Lit by fire, an exceptional cast turns the heat up in a story as relevant today as when Arthur Miller wrote it.
Miller’s parable of mass hysteria draws a savage parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692–“one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history”–and the McCarthyism that gripped America in the 1950s.
A searing exploration of persecution through ignorance, fear of ‘otherness,’ and our capacity to serve ourselves above all others, The Crucible reflects the ordinary evils latent in every society, and is one of the world’s most timelessly relevant stories.
